Coconino National Forest

I leave for my next project tomorrow morning. We will be going to Coconino National Forest, the Red Rocks Ranger District, in Sedona.


Here is our project description- "Welcome to beautiful Sedona! The mission of this crew will be to complete armored, banked, climbing turns which were started by a volunteer event in Sedona the weekend of the 22nd and 23rd. This will involve building a retaining wall and setting rocks in the tread surface and angle them upward to meet the top of the wall and form a banked climbing turn that will improve sustainability of the trail and improve user enjoyment. Once this project is finished, the crew will be doing a variety of tasks including re-building retaining walls, brushing, re-routing unsustainable sections of trail, putting in drainage features, and closing down illegally built trails. The crew will be hiking 1+ miles to the worksite each day, and could be more the following week. The crew will camp at the trailhead where there will be a porta potty and no running water."

Myself and a few others helped start this project on Friday. ACE was looking for a few people to volunteer one of their off days to get everything going. We spent the day basically collecting rocks and using a grip hoist to move and place the larger ones. It was a beautiful area, and the trail is actually an advanced mountain bike trail, and we encountered a few people while we were working. I was definitely impressed with their skill level because that trail looked scary for a bike!


We are going to spend 4 days on the trail doing work, then have 2 days off, then work for 4 more days. I expect to be a light shade of red by the time I am done with this project!
